Broken promises and chambray shirts

I did something yesterday that I promised ... no ... swore to myself  that I'd never do.  No, I didn't experiment with meth-amphetamines or murder anyone or eat a supersized serving of veal or attend a Nickleback concert.

I bought a chambray shirt.

See, despite all the amazing bloggers out there who do amazing things with this fabric, I've been terrified that just being in the vicinity of it would transform me into something like the following:

via
However, inspired by the adorable looks that Sharon from The Tiny Heart put together here, I decided to take the plunge into the world of chambray via this top from Old Navy.

And you know what? It's not half bad!  It's a much softer and lighter fabric that I expected it to be ... it's not really denim-like at all like I feared ...  and it's incredibly versatile.  While trying the shirt on on I thought immediately of at least five different outfits that I'd like to try with it (my rule is if I can't easily imagine a particular item of clothing forming part of at least 3 outfits, I don't buy it). Here is the first of many I'm excited to wear!  Yeah, I still get a little bit of an 80's vibe from it, so I decided to 80's it up on purpose by adding shoes and a clutch in bright, almost neon colors.

Shirt: Chambray Old Navy
Dress: Old Navy
Clutch: H&M (thrifted)
Shoes: Random mall store for $10.  Almost identical here

So what do you think of chambray? Love it, or hate it?

Have a great day, and thanks for reading!

  2. YAY you jumped on the chambray bandwagon! It looks so chic tied and paired with the striped skirt! Definitely nothing like the Britney/Justin denim trainwreck, haha. Thanks so much for the shoutout :)

  3. I love the trend on everyone else, but I have decided not to participate in this one :) I rarely wear button ups anyways, they never fit me right. Love the look on you though!

  8. Love the chambray shirt on you...glad you gave in and bought one!  It's one of the more versatile pieces I own.  And I agree with all the comments about your hair - so gorgeous!  And in response to your comment, I am so bad...I never wear my hair naturally curly.  It's just a big old hot rats nest!  Serious.  Some people were born with gorgeous curls...I just wasn't one of them.  No product on this planet can help me :)
Anyway, great post as always girl!

  9. After much hesitation, I too, bought a chambray shirt this past winter and I wore it tons under sweaters and over patterned button downs.  I'm actually wearing it today too, with white rolled chinos, a JCrew madras belt, and a pink JC via ebay bubble necklace. :)
I think this shirt (or your bright pink one) would look great under your JC polka dot linen sweater, since you mentioned that you wanted to add some color to that other outfit.

  17. This seriously made me giggle.  I remember when they wore those outfits to some MTV event and there was so much hype about it and I though it was so corny that they dressed THAT much alike!  hahaha

Your version is very classy though, and I love it paired with that amazing stripe dress!

  29. Thanks, Marion!  I don't know if you'd ever want to experiment with other products or have any interest in trying to wear your hair curly, but the Deva Curl line works MIRACLES.  Seriously.  Love the straight hair on you though ... it looks really elegant.
